Fukuryu: Japan's Underwater Kamikaze. An incredible project of the Japanese Empire during WWII.

Today we’ll talk about the Imperial Japanese Navy’s suicide divers. These underwater suicide units were called fukuryu…

By 1944, things were going terribly badly for the Japanese militarists. The United States and its allies were winning one victory after another. Japan was already in its death throes. To counter American amphibious operations, the Japanese command proposed creating Teishintai combat divers. Teishintai are Japanese suicide divers. The most famous of them are the legendary kamikaze. It was precisely these “underwater” kamikaze that the Japanese command wanted to create. Their mission was simple. Upon spotting an enemy ship, a diver would swim toward it and detonate a 15-kilogram contact mine attached to a 5-meter pole. The Fukuryu, of course, would perish in the process. However, the Japanese were taught from childhood that dying for the Emperor was the best kind of death. The fallen Teishintai were counted among the country’s patron saints and national heroes.
