Hotchkiss Revolver Guns. The destructive power of a multi-shot cannon.

In the second half of the 19th century, with the development of small warships, so-called torpedo boats began to appear in the world’s largest navies. In response, new types of light, high-speed artillery were introduced to counter them. Examples of such weapons were the French 37-mm and 47-mm “Gochkis” revolving cannons of 1873 and 1879, respectively. In 1872, the French company Hotchkiss developed a light, high-velocity, five-barreled 37-mm revolver gun. It had a rate of fire of 68 rounds per minute. The five barrels were held together by a pair of two copper discs. The gunner manually aimed the barrel block at the target using a handle.

The Hotchkiss M1873 revolver cannons were used to combat torpedo boats, destroyers, and smaller combat units. They were highly reliable, with a minimal number of misfires per 1,000 rounds fired. At ranges up to 500 meters, the hit rate was about 40%, and the fired shells easily penetrated the targets’ hull plating.
