STORYLINE:
U-S Secretary of State Colin Powell met Pakistan's President and Foreign Minister on Tuesday in an effort to shore up support for the coalition against terrorism.
Powell's day began with talks with the foreign minister, Abdul Sattar, and other top officials.
He later met Pakistan's President, General Pervez Musharraf.
Powell said Afghanistan's Taliban regime was "under enormous pressure" but refused to say whether he thought it near collapse.
Musharraf later told an Islamabad news conference the coalition strikes should be "short and targeted."
The U-S Secretary of State was also trying to calm tensions between Pakistan and India after new fighting in the disputed province of Kashmir.
The heaviest bombardment this year began on the eve of Powell's visit, but Indian and Pakistani guns fell silent early on Tuesday.
The U-S had been trying to head off just such a flare in hostilities between the longtime rivals, fearing it could erode Pakistan's support for the campaign in Afghanistan.
