If you were wondering what to do in Switzerland in summer and what to see in the Swiss Alps, here’s an idea for you. Truemmelbach Falls are a magnificent set of 10 waterfalls that are hidden in a cave-like environment inside a mountain in Lauterbrunnen Valley, often also called the Valley of the 72 Waterfalls. They are the largest European subterranean water falls and the world’s only glacier waterfalls that are accessible for visitors. An intricate set of paths, galleries, tunnels and platforms provide stunning views of the natural spectacle. 20,000 liters per second, that’s over 5,000 gallons every second, are thundering down with a deafening noise. The torrent carved its way through the mountain over thousands of years, carrying more than 20,000 tons of boulder every year. The result are beautiful artworks of smooth rock shapes that are lit by the sun that shimmers through small gaps in the mountain.

Trümmelbach Falls are a natural UNESCO World Heritage site and welcome visitors between April and November. They drain the glaciers of the Jungfrau, Moench and Eiger mountains that are part of the most famous mountains in the Swiss alps.

You climb a few stairs, cross small bridges, go through dimly lit tunnels and follow the narrow walkways to the many viewing platforms and cutout openings that provide stunning views of the ten falls that cascade down into gurgling and foaming pools before they churn and disappear again.

The noise in there is crazy! It’s like standing next to jumbo jet taking off inside a mountain. It is quite an experience to stand there and feel the power of all this water making the entire mountain vibrate.

What’s my conclusion of the visit? Would I go again? - Absolutely. Trümmelbach Falls and really the entire Lauterbrunnen Valley and Jungfrau Region are one of the most impressive and best places to visit in Switzerland.
