The Bedouin and His Wife | The Masnavi

A Bedouin and his wife have nothing but each other and a hunger that has worn them both thin. Night after night they quarrel, she pleading for a way out of their misery, he insisting there is a hidden richness in having nothing at all. When the fighting finally gives way to tenderness, they settle on a desperate plan: carry their one possession, a jug of sweet rainwater, all the way to the most openhanded king in the world. So the husband sets off across the desert, guarding the jug with his life, never guessing what flows past the king's own door.

"If you are wholly perplexed and in straits, have patience: patience is the key to joy."
