The Greengrocer and the Parrot | The Masnavi

A greengrocer keeps a sweet-voiced green parrot that minds the shop and chatters with every customer who walks in. One careless flight knocks over the bottles of rose-oil, and the furious owner strikes the bird so hard it loses the feathers on its head and falls silent for days. Then a bare-headed holy man passes by, and the parrot, sure it has found a fellow culprit, suddenly finds its voice again.

"Both reeds drank from the same water-source, (but) this one is empty and that one full of sugar."
