During his exile in Persia, Nehemiah served Artaxerxes as his cupbearer. The Persian king graciously grants Nehemiah permission to visit the city of Jerusalem. Nehemiah subsequently helps rebuild the walls that were demolished.

Nehemiah found the new walls strong but the people weak. A descendant of Aaron, Ezra, instills God's laws and the Jewish people repent and swear an oath to follow God's laws.

The book of Nehemiah is not only a story of Israel’s return home from the captivity, but also a record of God's faithfulness.
