Machine Learning for Location Based Services - Prof. Dr. Ioannis Giannopoulos
Prof. Dr. Ioannis Giannopoulos is a Full Professor for Geoinformation at Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien). Before coming to Vienna, Ioannis was a Postdoctoral Researcher and Lecturer at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich). In 2015, he received his PhD at ETH Zurich, which was honored with the ETH Culmann award for outstanding dissertations. He further holds a BSc. and MSc. in Computer Science from Saarland University with a focus on Artificial Intelligence and Human-Computer Interaction. His publications are mostly focusing in the areas of HCI, Geographic Information Science and Cognitive Sciences. More specifically, his research interests lie in Spatial HCI, Urban Computing and Machine Learning, LBS, Mobile and Remote Eye Tracking, Wayfinding as well as research in Mixed and Virtual Environments.
We are constantly interacting with our surrounding environment, e.g., to find our way through the city, to find something we are looking for, or just out of curiosity, trying to learn what is around us. Location based services (LBS) support us by providing relevant and personalized information based on our location. These services, when utilized in an optimal way, i.e., timing, relevance, and balanced amount of information, can be very beneficial for our tasks. Next to this information, the available interaction modalities with the digital medium and our surrounding environment are also crucial for an effective dialogue between humans and an LBS. Emerging Technologies and Machine Learning can help us develop an understanding of the involved processes, optimize the relevant interaction dialogues, classify the relevant interaction spaces, and, finally, assist humans in a more efficient and effective way. I will discuss the importance of available data sources from emerging technologies and methods for LBS.
