Back Home in Derry - Christy Moore

Written by the Irish revolutionary and poet Bobby Sands from Belfast. His poem "The Voyage" was smuggled out of prison, reworked by Christy Moore and put to the tune of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald".

The song is a powerful and fairly self-explanatory account of the United Irishmen who took part in the 1803 rebellion led by Robert Emmet who were then deported around the world to the penal colonies in Australia to serve out their time in work camps.

Conditions on the ships were treacherous and many perished during these voyages, with the worst still yet to come.

Despite the treatment of the prisoners by mother nature's elements and also their captors. Their resolve was captured perfectly in the original poem where Bobby wrote..........

"But our spirits shone high like stars in the sky,
We were rebels and no man would tame us"
(P.s. Apologies my camera's focus malfunctioned and in keeping with the song may make you seasick.)
