With cultural performances, Palestinians in Gaza mark 78th anniversary of Nakba

Wearing the traditional Palestinian clothes, Palestinians in Zawayda in Gaza performed the traditional cultural Dabke dance, while others planted small olive trees.

78 years have passed since the Nakba (catastrophe) in Palestine. 78 years since hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were forcibly displaced by "Israel" from their towns and villages, and their land seized through mass expulsions and systematic violence. 78 years filled with repeated massacres, dispossession, and ongoing violations of fundamental human rights against the indigenous population of the land.

Despite the scale and continuity of these Israeli crimes, accountability has remained absent, allowing impunity to persist generation after generation.

The roots of this ongoing tragedy trace back to Britain and France's plans for the region in World War I, when they redrew the map of the Middle East according to their own strategic interests, laying the groundwork for enduring instability and the establishment of a system that enabled the continued dispossession of the Palestinian people.

Today, the consequences of that remain visible, as Western-backed political arrangements and continued support for "Israel" perpetuate a system that Palestinians and many across the region describe as one of enduring injustice, underscoring, for Palestinians, the ongoing demand for accountability, self-determination, and justice that has yet to be realized.
