Spanish R & RR sounds - (Learn how to roll/thrill them with a native) in less than 4 minutes!
Rrrrrr.... "Lo prometido es deuda" (a promise is a promise). So, Watch the full video here with the link on Youtube where I explain carefully the 2 types R sounds in Spanish & and you will sound like a native speaker ‼️🔊
(To all the people that think it's impossible because of their mother tongue: one main rule is "don't use the throat to make the sound of them... don't close the throat" listen and read carefully the instructions). Practice and you will do it! 😉
En Español, the letter R sounds far different than the English equivalent. In fact, the Spanish R sound can be one of the most difficult for English-speaking learners to master. That’s probably because there are dos (2) "R sounds".
0:30 (tongue rolling explanation) ✔️The first is the R suave (soft r). It sounds like sort of like a very quick English “d” sound, "made by flicking the tongue against the roof of the mouth" . You can hear it in words like:
1:03 Acabar (to finish)
1:13 Orden (order)
1:20 Arte (art)
1:30 (tongue rolling explanation) ✔️The second R sound is the R fuerte or RR (strong r). This is the sound that is commonly known as the rolled r. It sounds like a trill and "it is made by pushing air out of the mouth while lightly pressing the tongue against the roof of the mouth" . You can hear it in words like:
2:04 Carro (car)
2:13 Rincón (corner)
2:19 Arriba (up)
2:30 Alrededor (around)
2:42 Advices - Practica (practice) until you get them! I will record a video to teach you those sounds with Rrrrr.... And also the rules of them in grammar and vocabulary 😉
⚠️ One of the common mistakes that Spanish students make is to think that Spanish letter R is pronounced the same way double R is. But, both sounds are grammatically different and are also pronounced in a different way.
- The letter R when is written simply has a soft sound, as in the words: cara, pera or mira. When you type double, RR, it has a strong sound like in the words barro, cerro or perro.
- The difficulty of this letter is that sometimes it is written simply, R, but it has a strong sound like in the words "risa or alrededor".
Let's see some rules that will help you to know when we should write with R o RR.
📝 Rules of Words that are written with R
Nº. 1- At the end of a word. In these cases it has a soft sound (sentir, saber, intuir o confiar) .
Nº. 2- In the middle of a word, with soft sound (mirada, barba, sartén, calendario or marco).
Nº. 3- After the consonants B, C, D, F, G, P and T with soft sound (brillo, criado, dromedario, frágil, grillo, prueba or tronco).
Nº. 4- At the beginning of the word. In these cases it has a strong sound (rama, remedio, ritual, rodamiento or rumiante) .
Nº. 5- After the consonants L, N and S , it has a strong sound (alrededor, honradez or israelita).
Nº. 6- After the prefix sub, also has a strong sound (subrayado or subrogación).
📝 Rules of Words that are written with RR
Nº. 1- The letter RR is written in the strong sounds that go between vowels (arroyo, arriba, barreño, carrera, desarrollo or parrilla).
Nº. 2- The negation prefix in becomes ir when it goes in front of R (irreal or irrealizable).
Nº. 3- In compound words whose first element ends in vowel and the second begins with R (pelirrojo or pararrayos).
➡️ Excepciones: "When the two terms of the compound are separated by a hyphen as in Greco-Roman".
