DEPLETED URANIUM, TUNGSTEN, and STEEL APFSDS | penetration depth comparison

Comparison between the penetration depths of Depleted Uranium, Tungsten, and Steel long rod projectiles. The projectile design is kept the same for all materials, with the velocity being altered to maintain a constant amount of kinetic energy for all tests. This effectively simulates them all being fired out of the same cannon with equal amounts of propellant, allowing just the material properties to be compared. The aerodynamic cap and stabilising fins have been neglected from the model for simplicity.

The material properties were taken from literature:

To Note:
There are few studies which numerically simulate depleted uranium, so the material properties may not be completely reliable or show certain phenomena. Also, the material may behave slightly better or worse than in reality.
Additionally, the material property type used is that of Johnson-Cook failure, which does not take certain behaviours into account such as 'tip sharpening' or ignition, which people may expect to see.
