Ricoeur-Inspired Phenomenological Hermeneutic Approach

The French philosopher, Paul Ricoeur’s (1975, 1976, 1981, 1992) hermeneutic phenomenological human science approach is used to understand and interpret the meaning of human lived experiences. Ricoeur’s approach is appropriate in many qualitative study because of five reasons: 1) The view that narratives are the best approach to investigate the lived experiences of humans and as means to collect the research data (Charalambous, Papadopoulos, & Beadsmoore, 2008); 2) theory of text interpretation as a framework for data analysis (Tan et al., 2009); 3) exploration of temporality relating time to the narratives thereby unfolding existential features of the experience (Hardwick, 2017); 4) interconnectedness of the self, other persons and the moral norm (Ricoeur, 1992); and 5) the rejection of bracketing (Charalambous et al., 2008).
This presentation is about Ricoeur's Philosophy of Hermeneutic Phenomenology and Data Analysis.
