Part 101: HOW TO: P2V Ubuntu Linux – Sync Changes Using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 9.0

Welcome back to Hancock’s VMware Half Hour!

This episode has been an absolute marathon — over 60 hours of preparation and 22 hours of raw footage, all edited down into a tight 32-minute deep dive. Why? Because VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 9.0 simply refused to behave long enough to demo a single clean sequence.

But I was determined to prove that Converter 9.0 does still do what it says on the tin… even if it took five days of filming, endless retries, and a lot of video editing magic to get there!

In Part 101, we focus on the new Synchronize Changes capability for Linux P2V conversions, a feature added in Converter 9.0. If you’ve ever battled inconsistent sync jobs, failed helpers, dodgy estimated times, or the infamous 91% stall… this is the guide you've been waiting for.

I walk through everything — the good, the bad, the technical, and the downright ridiculous — and show you how to get a successful, validated P2V sync with matching checksums.

And yes… it really works. Q.E.D. ✔️

📌 What You’ll Learn in Part 101

How to properly configure and execute Synchronize Changes using Converter 9.0
Why the Helper VM can be both essential and problematic
How Converter uses rsync under the hood
What happens at 91% (and why it’s the danger zone!)
How to validate your sync using md5sum
Why each sync creates destination snapshots
How to perform the final cutover with Power Off Source / Power On Destination
A full end-to-end demonstration including checksum verification of a 10GB test file
