In this video, we walk you through how to use VMware vCenter Converter Standalone — often referred to as VMware Converter — to resize the virtual disk of a Windows 11 virtual machine during a live conversion process.
VMware Converter is a powerful and flexible tool that allows you to clone, convert, and resize VMs from within your vSphere environment, and it's particularly useful when dealing with VMs that cannot be easily resized in-place — such as those with snapshots, complex partition layouts, or when other tools fail.
🛠️ What we demonstrate in this video:
✅ Introduction to VMware Converter
✅ Selecting a Windows 11 VM as the source
✅ Resizing the virtual disk (thin or thick provisioning)
✅ Adjusting individual partition sizes during the conversion
✅ Avoiding issues caused by Recovery Partitions at the end of disk
✅ Creating a new resized VM with "no downtime" to the original
✅ Powering on and validating the resized server
✅ Bonus: Tips for servers with locked or system partitions
💡 This method is particularly effective when:
A snapshot is blocking disk size changes
The Recovery Partition is in the way
DISKPART or GParted solutions are not suitable
You want to clone and resize a VM at the same time
Working with both MBR and GPT partition tables
📌 Works with:
Windows Server 2025, 2022, 2019, 2016
Windows 10 and 11 (desktop OS)
vSphere 7.x and 8.x
VMs on local datastores or vSAN
🧰 Tools Used:
VMware vSphere
Windows Server 11 VM
VMware vCenter Converter Standalone (latest version)
VMware Tools (recommended for source VM)
⚠️ Note: VMware Converter must be downloaded and installed separately and may not be included with vSphere by default. Always validate support for your OS and environment.
📺 Perfect for system admins, home lab builders, and IT pros looking to resize VM disks safely and efficiently without manual partitioning work or downtime.
