A 3D look at the new Red Wings Arena
The new Red Wings arena and entertainment district won't be complete until 2017, but we're getting a first glimpse at what the new complex will look like when it's finished.
We've seen the one-dimensional drawings of the complex, but now we're getting a look at a massive, high-tech 3D model inside Olympia Entertainment and Olympia Development's Preview Center.
The 1-ton model shows the entire 45-block District Detroit project in high detail.
The Preview Center is initially open to businesses and investors who are interested in opportunities in The District Detroit and the new Detroit arena. Open house events and season ticket holder appointments will begin early next year.
THE HOCKEY ARENA
"We've tried to look at everything, from leg room - which is nonexistent at The Joe - and sort of fanny room, which is also a missing thing there, and amenities will be different [and] more plentiful. More restaurants and things to go to so you can expand your evening, [and] take it from a three-hour evening at The Joe to a five- or six-hour evening before and after," says Tom Wilson of Olympia Entertainment. "The whole experience is going to be better, with better sightlines, better acoustics and everything else."
Here is a video preview of what the sights and sounds will be during a hockey game.
THE PLAZA
Wilson says more than 1,200 events will held in the complex every year, and the plaza will imitate Rockefeller Plaza in New York.
"It actually holds about 3,500 people, so on Tiger opening day we anticipate those people out there watching on a big LED screen. But we'll have a skating rink there, we'll have Christmas displays, and before most of our concerts - when the weather is right - we'll have local bands playing there," says Wilson. "It's just someplace that you can go, whether you're going to the event or just hanging downtown."
