Zoom H8 - Can you record a whole drum kit?

Ok channel friends, today I’m finding out if you can successfully record a whole drum kit with this spider looking gadget from Zoom, the H8!

For 5 or 6 years now I’ve used the Zoom Q3HD for field recording, video audio and sampling but sadly it has died!

After the grieving process was over I replaced it with the new H8, these Handy Recorders have improved a lot since the Q3.

Here’s a quick rundown of what “The Spider” is capable of....
* Can record up to 12 tracks with.....
* Applications for field, music and podcasting show screen shots
* 6 XLR inputs, two with multi jacks for line inputs with phantom power
* XY Condenser mics with 90 or 120 degrees positions
* It’s an audio interface
* Has touch screen options like triggering your intro and outro music or sound FX during the show.

Ok, first I set the H8 up over the drums to test how it would sound with the XY cardioid capsules only.Next I plugged my usual drum mics into the H8.
AKG D112 for the bass drum, Shure SM57 for the snare, Audix D2 in between the two rack toms, Sennheiser 421 on the floor tom and the Lewitt LCT140Airs for overheads left and right. Also, I set the Zoom up just behind the floor tom and recorded the XY’s as well, that’s 8 tracks
.....just because I can!

Right, so the answer is a definite YES, you can successfully record a whole drum kit with this H8! The preamps are really clean, clear with no discernible colorisation. The recording sounds a bit muffled and that’s because usually I apply EQ and filter some of this out using my Soundcraft console. My recording space is very dry, the idea is to make the room disappear, I have very low ceilings too. But this is just the sound of the mics plugged into the Zoom H8 with no manipulation from the available tools included in the H8 itself like EQ, compression etc, etc.

Final thoughts?

This unit would be ideal to record a demo of a band in a rehearsal situation, especially if you get the extra XLR module for the H8, the EXH-8 which allows another 4 inputs. SO you could record:

Kick
Snare
OH L+R
Bass
Guitars
Vox
BVox

.....all in 96k/24bit quality on this one handheld device!
