On My Way To Harlem - Gregory Porter

When I first bought this album, I noticed that there was already a video on YouTube for just about every tune on it. I was glad because I feel as though this artist is one of the rare acts to come along in one's lifetime. So rare and so special that it is the duty of all those who have heard him to share the experience of listening to him with the rest of those who haven't. In my opinion, Gregory Porter is so special a singer and songwriter that to hear him and not tell everyone you know [and even people you don't know] about him is an offense on the level of having a sure-fire cure for poverty, sadness, bad health, and every other menace that confronts the human race and keeping it to yourself. I'll concede that just hearing Mr. Porter do his thing won't solve all of the world's problems. But it'll certainly help dealing with them a bit easier. His sophomore effort entitled, "Be Good", is, as was the case with his debut effort, an album completely free of "filler" material. In other words, it's a masterpiece from beginning to end. I could have chosen any one of the songs from it and been satisfied that I picked a gem but this one in particular [On My Way To Harlem] has, in my opinion, what it takes to become a standard. I once said that Gregory Porter is giving fans of jazz singing a reason to look forward to the coming years. I don't think I've ever said anything in my life that has turned out to be as right as that.
