How to defend takedowns with BJJ

Your opponent shoots in for a takedown and you're about to hit the mat hard, unless you know these BJJ defense secrets.

First up, the sprawl. The second you see that level change, shoot your hips back and down, driving your weight onto their shoulders. Stuff their head to the side and you've killed their power completely.

But what if they get deeper? Here's where BJJ saves you. Grab a front headlock, lock your hands, and spin to their back. Now you're the one in control and they're the one in trouble.

Okay they got even deeper and lifted you off your feet. Don't panic. Overhook one arm tight, underhook the other, and as you hit the ground, immediately close your guard. You just turned their successful takedown into your home territory.

The secret most people miss? It's all about the hips. Keep them away and you stay standing. Let them get close and you better be ready to pull guard.

Drill these three defenses this week, the sprawl, the front headlock spin, and the guard pull recovery. Master all three and takedowns become opportunities, not problems.
