In just two semesters, a team of ten students set out to develop and test a robot that could one day explore asteroids in space. This gigantic - and initially unimaginable - challenge of space robotics was taken on by the two aspiring mechanical engineers Alexander Spiridonov and Valerio Schelbert.
Together with their team, they combined their practical experience and skills in space travel and robotics and brought the ETH Zurich focus project "SpaceHopper" to jump. With new and innovative approaches, they are tackling this unprecedented challenge.
A talk that shows how tough challenges can result in great innovations. Inspired by NASA's Mars rover missions and the success of New Space, the two students became interested in everything related to space and science at an early age. Following this passion, they are now studying mechanical engineering in their last bachelor's semester with a focus on robotics.
During the last year they were involved in the SpaceHopper project at ETH Zürich. The goal is to develop a robot that is able to explore the surface of asteroids and move in a controlled way. So far, no such system exists and many challenges lie ahead.
Tackling this challenge, they can combine their interests in robotics and space travel and work together in a team of ten like-minded people on new technologies.
