It’s time for another edition of our show th Hit Song Redux where we travel back to a week in the golden era of the rock and roll and recalibrate the top 10 songs of THAT SPECIFIC week based on their legacy since THEIR PEAK POSITION ON THE BILLBOARD HOT 100. including your stories and dedications. It’s a tip of the hat to my hero Casey Kasem… this time we travel back to September 27 1979.

Coming in at #10 a band that was inspired by the Beatles and then their principal member produced the first song released by the fab four in decades. Jeff Lynne and Electric Light Orchestra with Don’t Bring Me Down from their album Discovery. the album sold 2 million copies and so did the single. It was their first number one album in the UK. Jeff Lynne would say that the song was a great big galloping ball of distortion. he said, I wrote it at the last minute, ‘cause I felt there weren’t enough loud ones on the album. This was just what I was after.”

One of ELO’s classic rock standards…For those wondering why Jeff Lynne sings the word Groose repeatedly after the song’s title, Originally it was just place holder word to fill the gap in his vocal when he was coming up with the lyrics. a short while later, german engineer Reinhold Mack heard the the demo and asked Jeff Lynne how he knew "Gruss" means "greetings" in his country's language. A happy coincidence form there Lynee felt he should leave it in. Fans misinterpreted the lyrics as Bruce instead of Groos and so Lynne, ever the jokester started singing Bruce at live shows.

Don’t bring me down and really as of Discovery is notable in that it was the first ELO album not to feature their usual string trio of Mik Kaminski, Hugh McDowell and Melvyn Gale, thought they were in some of the music videos. Don’t Bring Me Down would eventually peak at #3… We had some great stories form our viewers on this song…
