Miscanthus x 'Giganteus'

In today's plant of the day this is a beast, and not for the faint hearted! This is the Miscanthus that is grown as a bio-fuel due to it's phenomenal rate of growth. From ground level to 4 metres in the space of a few months, it's extraordinary. It doesn't spread, is a clump-former and can be divided in the spring in the same way you'd split and divide one of its much smaller cousins. We have it growing In the family 'jungle garden' where the aim was to have large oversized plants and it certainly lives up to the expectation. In fact it sits head and shoulders above everything else and looks magnificent. During the winter it's very robust stems turn a lovely biscuit brown and have a good presence well into February. When spring is rearing it's head they can be cut back to ground level, the old growth composted and within a few weeks it will soon be racing again for the sky.
It needs full sun and a reasonable quality soil but other than that it's extremely adaptable and versatile.
