In this video from the Berklee Online graduate course Writing and Analyzing Hit Songs, author Bonnie Hayes discusses “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X, and the controversy over Billboard taking the song off of its country chart. She also discusses how part of the success of “Old Town Road” comes from the blending of genres, which is a smart business decision. Blending genres is something that’s been done in the music industry for a while, in fact some genres are created as an outcome of two different genres blending together. For example rap rock, ska punk, and glam metal existed long before Lil Nas X fused hip-hop with country. But that doesn’t mean what he did with this song isn’t special. What’s particularly exciting about genre blending is that the mixture of two genres creates a unique sound, one that is not quite country, not quite hip-hop, and therefore the artist isn’t tied into one specific genre.

ABOUT BONNIE HAYES:
Bonnie Hayes serves as the chair of Berklee’s Songwriting department as well as the program director of the Berklee Online Master of Arts in Songwriting program. She has more than 35 years of experience as an educator, songwriter, producer, performer, and recording artist. During her career, she has been signed to five record deals and five writing deals, and toured as a side musician with Billy Idol and Cris Williamson. She has written songs for Bonnie Raitt, Cher, Bette Midler, David Crosby, Robert Cray, Adam Ant, and Booker T. & the MG’s, and produced more than 40 records. She designed and implemented the youth program for the Blue Bear School of Music in San Francisco, and has taught piano, guitar, theory, songwriting, and composition to thousands of students at institutions throughout the US.
