Kyung Wha Chung plays Mendelssohn violin concerto (1980)

Kyung-Wha Chung plays Mendelssohn violin concerto with Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Sir Georg Solti at Chicago Symphony Hall in 1980.

In a perfect harmony here, but apparently their first encounter a decade earlier was less than smooth both being artists with very strong characters. At an interview with the Financial Times in 2003, John Tusa, former BBC presenter and the managing director of the Barbican Centre, recounts;
"I remember when Solti was conducting the LSO and Kyung-Wha Chung, they really didn't get on. She stormed off the rehearsal platform shouting 'Bastard dictator!', which he countered with 'Korean bitch!'. After the performance, which was remarkable, Solti was still talking about it. 'That woman,' he said, 'standing there trying to conduct, making these... circles.'"
Fortunately for music lovers, they eventually overcame the fiery first clash and left us the brilliant examples of Elgar, Berg and Bartok concerto recordings and this video of the Mendelssohn. In fact, in his long and happy exclusive contract with Decca label, Ms Chung was practically the only violinist he chose to record with (apart from Kulenkampff and Elman, both from very early years of Solti's career).
