R&S 449 I hunger and I thirst. The Old Testament lesson is Exodus 16: 2-15. The Israelites are in the wilderness and the fun has worn off. They are regrettings fleeing Egypt and blame Moses for dragging them into a place with no food and water. They have no trust in God and their unmet physical needs are blotting out thoughts of anything else. But God provides and food arrives - quail in the evening and manna in the morning. This hymn parallels our physical needs with our spiritual needs which Jesus meets.
