Why would we canoe 17 MILES into the Atlantic Ocean? | 4K

We decided to canoe over 17 miles (27 km) through the Atlantic Ocean to a coral reef off the lower Florida Keys. This video documents that adventure.

So what can YOU do to help Coral Reefs?:

1. Avoid sunscreens with Oxybenzone, (BP-3), Oxybenzone, Benzophenone-2 (BP-2), or Octinoxate.

2. You can pick up trash you see in the area.

3. Educate others about litter, pollution, and about reef-safe sunscreens. I personally use Manda sunscreens because they are reef-safe, use little to no plastic in packaging, and stay on all day (including in the water). 4. You can volunteer with Mote and help with coral restoration projects [https://mote.org/support/volunteer].

5. If you SCUBA dive you can partner with Project Aware like I have and log the dives where you collect trash [https://www.projectaware.org/everydiveasurveydive].

**If you want to put in even more effort toward affecting additional long-lasting and profound change, here are some actions you can undertake, and some organizations you can team up with.**

1*. One of the best way to keep plastics from entering the ocean is to eliminate them. Plastic bans, which are legal decisions that impact towns, communities, and states are paramount for keeping plastics out of our ecosystems. Surfrider is a nonprofit organization that has good resources for enacting and facilitating these bans. [https://www.surfrider.org/coastal-blog/entry/surfrider-foundation-announces-plastic-bag-law-activist-toolkit]. The background photo is actually one I captured.

2*. In addition to plastic bans, legislation and actions that reduce/eliminate overfishing and pollution (including dumping raw sewage into our waterways and runoff from agriculture), as well as action on climate change are essential for the health of our oceans and other hydrological ecosystems.

Our warming waters have already lead to a plethora of problems for reefs and marine ecosystems. These include ocean acidification, coral bleaching, stressful coral events, and even warm waters being a more hospitable environment for certain bacteria, viruses, and diseases that affect corals.

3*. Text "resist" to 50409 and this will walk you through so you can find out who your reps are.

4*. Call 202-224-312 to be transferred to your senators today by phone.

5*. Text your zip code to 520-200-2223. You will get a text back with all of your representatives contact info. It will give you federal and state.
