NRBQ - Stomp

NRBQ met Slim Harpo in New Jersey in 1968, the bluesman loved the group and organized a concert in New York, in a place called The Scene, the commotion that was generated from this performance made musicians like Jimmy Hendrix and Jimmy Page were among the public of their first shows, both declared themselves fans of the band, this first performance also led them to obtain a contract with the Columbia label, so it would be their first LP. In 1969 the band debuted with their self-titled LP, on this album they made it very clear what their influences were, the LP opened its A-side with Eddie Cochran's “C'mon Everybody”, on this album we can find versions of Sun Ra, Bruce Channel , Carla Bley and Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, as well as her own songs that are now classics in her repertoire, such as "Stomp", "You Can't Hide" or "Mama Get Down Those Rock And Roll Shoes". The sales were moderate without great commercial repercussion, but the band began to have some unconditional fans, among which were many celebrities from the world of music, this caused a legend to be forged around them as a cult band. Music critics didn't quite understand the group's musical perspective, they didn't understand that scruffy hippie-looking dudes were claiming '50s Rockabilly,' 30s Jazz standards or '60s Pop, all played. with the virtuosity of jazz musicians, this caused critics to call them an unclassifiable band incapable of focusing on one genre and following a style; "Hippies don't like Rockabilly and greasers don't like long hair," you could read in a magazine of the time. The world was not ready for them in the early 70s!
