Ship ALGOMA NIAGARA Sliding the wall at Lock 1, Welland Canal

A view of the downbound ALGOMA NIAGARA performing the typical wall-slide approach towards Lock 1 on the Welland Canal, Aug.7, 2019. This is a common lock-entry procedure used by many (but not all) ships on the Welland Canal, whereby a ship that is approaching a lock opening, will angle its bow against the approach wall's rub rail in order to align itself with the lock opening. The concrete pier walls here are lined with sacrificial rubber-edged rail for this purpose. The angle they are aiming is for the bow to be about 15 degrees off the rub rail.
At 00:14 and at 04:28 the downbound FRIEDA can be seen at Lock 2, and at 06:50 the icebreaker HMCS PIERRE RADISSON can be seen undergoing repairs inside the Heddle Port Weller drydock.
