Design Around the World: Aretha Franklin’s Rose Estate, Historic Dutch Schooner & More | Open House

In this episode of Open House, join host Sara Gore as we do it all: setting sail, stepping back in time, and traveling across continents to explore extraordinary spaces brought to life by passion, history, and design.

We begin in Gramercy Park, inside a full-floor penthouse surrounded by sweeping skyline views and filled with light from floor-to-ceiling windows. With eleven-foot ceilings, Italian white oak floors, and a private rooftop terrace perfect for summer gatherings, this home captures the best of sophisticated city living.

Next, in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, architect David Bench of Bench Architecture shows us how he breathed new life into a narrow townhouse, turning it into a serene composition of wood, brick, and light with a meticulous eye for craftsmanship. By preserving original brick and fireplaces, integrating white oak throughout, and designing a sculptural staircase that doubles as a screen, Bench reimagines the flow of a historic home while embracing natural light and material continuity.

From there, we travel to Detroit’s historic Rose Estate, once the home of the legendary Aretha Franklin. Built in 1927 by architect John Case Casale for Harry Burnett Sr., the Tudor-style residence has been lovingly restored by owners Trevor Thomas and Brandon Lynum. Their meticulous work celebrates the home’s storied past—from the limestone-encased great hall with its 28-foot ceilings to the red clawfoot tub that honors Franklin’s original bath—while reviving its original grandeur for a new era.

Across the Atlantic, designer Julien Sebban, founder of the Paris-based collective Uchronia, invites us into his vibrant Montmartre loft. Once an industrial space, it now bursts with color, texture, and playful craftsmanship. From silver-leafed columns to sculptural furniture and mirrored mosaics, every detail reflects Sebban’s philosophy of architecture as joy and self-expression.

Finally, we set sail aboard the OOSTERSCHELDE, a three-masted Dutch schooner built in 1917 and lovingly restored to her original glory. Under the command of Captain Jan-Willem Bos, this historic tall ship has circled the globe and continues to bring maritime heritage to life.
