Aluminum and Copper (II) Chloride Reaction

A ball of aluminum foil is added to an aqueous solution of copper(II) chloride, which causes an exothermic, single replacement, oxidation–reduction reaction to occur.

Side note: If you're going to have students do this then I would recommend using smaller strips of aluminum foil to conserve your supplies and $$$.

This video describes the reaction between aluminum (Al) and a copper (II) chloride solution (CuCl2). This reaction is a single displacement redox reaction. Students should record the temperature of the copper (II) chloride solution before placing the ball of aluminum into the solution. As the reaction proceeds, the aluminum replaces copper (I) to form aluminum chloride - which is soluble in solution.The copper (I) is displaced out of solution as a solid.
