Parallel lines and transverseal Concepts

Concept of Parallel Lines and Transversal

1. Parallel Lines

Two lines in the same plane that never meet each other, even when extended infinitely, are called parallel lines.
Example: Railway tracks.

2. Transversal

A line that intersects two or more lines at distinct points is called a transversal.

Angles Formed by a Transversal

When a transversal cuts two parallel lines, several pairs of angles are formed.

Important Angle Pairs

1. Corresponding Angles
Angles in the same relative position : If lines are parallel, corresponding angles are equal.

2. Alternate Interior Angles
Angles inside the parallel lines and on opposite sides of the transversal.

3. Alternate Exterior Angles
Angles outside the parallel lines and on opposite sides of the transversal.

4. Co-interior (Consecutive Interior) Angles
Angles inside the parallel lines on the same side of the transversal.

Key Facts to Remember

○Corresponding angles are equal.
○Alternate interior angles are equal.
○Alternate exterior angles are equal.
○Co-interior angles add up to 180°
