Stephen Burroughs bears the distinct honor of being the most crooked figure in American folklore. Much to his own chagrin, he dominated the criminal world of the post-independence United States. A preacher's son from Hanover, New Hampshire that turned both the American and Canadian culture upside down. Burroughs life was a string of poorly thought out failures brought upon by the strange circumstances of his obstinate personality. For decades, Burroughs was the shining example of a rather smart individual, but a person who thought they were smart in all the wrong areas. Burroughs quick thinking and sharp tongue carried him across the early history of the United States of America.

As a criminal celebrity, Burroughs may very well be one of the earliest examples of "True Crime". Burroughs published tales of his own crimes in his pseudo-autobiography: "Memoirs of the Notorious Stephen Burroughs". Originally an attempt to (poorly) clear his own reputation, these "Memoirs" only made Burroughs more notorious. These "Memoirs" were of course subjected to the unreliable narrator that was Stephen Burroughs. Burroughs held a monopoly on his own story—even after death. All extensive biographies of Burroughs have come to futility, he does not even have a Wikipedia page (as of today). Burroughs abilities as an escape artist persist postmortem. The centuries have not dulled the absurdity of Stephen Burroughs' spirit. It is a unique spirit of all the wrong lessons.

Here is Stephen Burroughs told from his own clutches and complaints!
