DRC president pardons soldiers convicted of plotting Kabila assassination: Nixon Katembo

Democratic Republic of Congo's president has pardoned at least 24 men convicted of plotting the 2001 assassination of then-leader Laurent Kabila.
Amongst those now free was Eddy Kapend former army chief of staff, believed to be the mastermind behind the assassination. In the past President Joseph Kabila had repeatedly resisted calls to pardon the prisoners, eleven of whom died whilst in custody. Laurent Kabila's death further scarred a country with a dark history of political assassinations, including the 1961 killing of its first post-independence prime minister, Patrice Lumumba by secessionist rebels with support from Belgian officials.
African Affairs Analyst Nixon Katembo is on the line to share some insights on this story. He is in Johannesburg.
