Leatherman FREE P4 : First Detailed Review ! [NEW 2019 LEATHERMAN MULTI-TOOL]

Frankly, I think the Free P4 does not play in the same yard as the Wave and Charge that are more versatile because of their possibility to be accessorized (bit kit/ extender).
But this model is still very ingenious, it is very beautiful, perfectly assembled, the tools, all accessible to folded pliers, are easily deployable as the pliers itself, all are lockable and the inadvertent opening of the blades when the pliers is deployed is prevented.
If the pliers opens less widely than those of the Wave or Charge, it nevertheless seems more robust.
Here are the criticisms that I can make based on my introduction:
- the handles are much less comfortable than those of Wave and Charge,
- the magnets, which magnetize the whole of the multi-tool, will pose problems in the middle where are iron filings or other metal debris,
- the file, which is only two useful faces, is ridiculous,
- the rules are ridiculous,
- the can opener is significantly less efficient than those of Wave and Charge,
- for the right-handers, it is curious to see the saw placed where should be the notched blade (in the image of their position on the Wave and Charge),
- the sheath is beautiful but, being light in color, it is messy,
- the landyard ring is ridiculous,
- no pocket clip (maybe there will be one in accessories to mount instead of the landyard ring = the pocket clip of the P2),
- the can opener is less effective than those of the Wave and Charge.
The relative discomfort of the handles is explained by:
- their lesser width,
- the internal non-return of the metal of the frame (no specific housing for the blades),
- the protrusions of the unlockers,
- the protrusions of the small lugs for joining the handles.
Note that all the screws are in Torx 8 (except the two screws of the landyard ring, in Torx 6 format), the Security Torx profile has been removed, which is a good thing.
The hammer ! :) Of course, it's nice to have this feature.
The semi-locking mechanism at the pliers/handle connection is remarkable.
One-handed opening and closing of the knife blade seems a little less easy than for Wave and Charge:
- the gripping hole is placed lower with respect to the axis,
- the lever of the unlocker can mark the thumb, its operation is less easy than with the liner-lock,
but the security of the folding of the blade is increased.
What looks like a awl, this tool with an oblong hole and a small flat screwdrive and small chisel, is considered an "extra-small screwdriver" by Leatherman even if it taunts the wood and even if it is significantly wider than the small flat screwdriver of Wave and Charge (eyeglass screwdriver).
Note the appearance of a prybar/large flat screwdriver.
Locking tools and blades is an extraordinary outfit, there is absolutely no play.
So the conclusion ... the Free P4 is beautiful, amazing ... "the most advanced multipurpose tool ever made" ... certainly ... but it can not replace a Wave or a Charge equipped with its accessories: let's admit for the Wingman's manicure file but certainly not the absence of the bit driver.
"Mulpurpose" ... what do we do in front of a Torx or Hex screw ?
The change of packaging, with a leaflet and a small notice, I agree, it pleasantly changes the very basic boxes used previously and it's still more class. With an adhesive sealing label ... I had indeed advised to put such label to prevent the re-packing of the products.
Is the Free P4 a [Wingman+Sidekick] PLUS ? :)
The easy and combined extraction of tools on these models is quite similar to that of the P4 ...same cross-headed screwdriver, prybar, file...
