Why Tennis Players Turn to Pickle Juice to Boost Performance
When American tennis player Frances Tiafoe said pickle juice had helped him reach the quarterfinals of the Australian Open back in 2019, plenty of people were taken aback.
After all, who swigs the remnants of a jar of pickles to boost their sporting performance?
Well, more people than you might think.
Pickle juice has long had its place in athletic arenas worldwide, and marathon runners often quench their thirst with it after crossing the finishing line. The history books will forever deem a 2000 NFL playoff match between the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles as the "Pickle Juice Game," in which the Eagles claimed to combat record temperatures by drinking - you guessed it - pickle juice.
But, it's probably not for the reasons you might initially expect.
