“The most important part is getting them comfortable with the truck. You’re taking people, the largest vehicle they’ve ever driven is a Ford Focus, Tempest trucks are 30 foot long, to say nothing about the boom going up in the air. There’s a lot of different switches and everything else. You’ve got to get them comfortable with what that truck can do. Then you can actually get them next to the aircraft. But first thing you’ve got to get them comfortable. There’s a lot of anxiety the first time you’re driving something that big and the first time going up in the air.”

“A little bit of frost on the wing can destroy up to 30 percent of the lift of that aircraft. Deicing is absolutely critical. You’re not going to fly without deicing.

STORYLINE:
Every summer, Delta brings about 400 workers to Minneapolis to a three-day “summer deice boot camp.” They go through computer-based training, they practice under the watchful eye of instructors, and then put those lessons to work on planes — using water instead of propylene glycol.

The boot campers, who rotate through in groups of a dozen or so, return to their home bases and train 6,000 co-workers before October, says Jeannine Ashworth, Delta's vice president of airport operations.
