Teaching English Tips: Eliciting Techniques to Teach Vocabulary Without Knowing Students' Language
How do you teach vocabulary to your students if you don't speak their language? You elicit! Eliciting allows you to teach any language without needing to know the language of your students.
Eliciting is all about pulling language out from students. New English language teachers often make the mistake of simply getting up in front of their classes and teaching vocabulary in a lecture-style format. Don't do that :) What's worse is many teachers just translate the meaning to their students, constantly speaking in their students' mother tongue. Don't do that either :)
A teaching tip for vocabulary is to always elicit the meaning (and often the word) out from your students. Eliciting allows your students to participate in the learning process instead of just being fed information from you. You should be eliciting 100% of the time. Always elicit :)
Here's a list of the different techniques used to elicit vocabulary.
1. Miming
2. Context
3. Definition
4. Synonym
5. Antonym
6. Hyponym
7. Pictures
8. Drawing
9. Realia
10. Props
You are going to use a combination of techniques depending on your word. For example, if you are teaching action verbs, miming would make the most sense. If you are teaching something that is more abstract, context/definition would be the right technique to pick
Eliciting should be fast and clear. As you get better at eliciting meaning, the whole process gets easier over time. Great English teachers are fantastic elicitors.
