A former senior Russian general has been sentenced to seven years in prison after being found guilty of accepting large-scale bribes, amid an ongoing Kremlin-led crackdown on corruption within the country’s defence ministry.

Lieutenant General Vadim Shamarin, once deputy chief of the army’s general staff and head of military communications, was convicted of taking bribes totaling 36 million roubles (approximately £331,000) from a telecommunications equipment manufacturer between 2019 and 2023.

According to Russia’s Investigative Committee, in exchange for the payments, Shamarin ensured that the company received inflated state contracts.

Shamarin was arrested in 2024 as part of a broader anti-corruption sweep targeting senior figures within the defence ministry. The operation followed the dismissal of longtime Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, who was replaced by economist Andrei Belousov, a move widely seen as an effort by President Vladimir Putin to improve accountability and efficiency within the military.

Russia’s state-run Tass news agency quoted Shamarin’s lawyer as confirming the court's verdict: “Shamarin was sentenced to seven years in a maximum-security penal colony, received a seven-year ban on holding public office, and was stripped of his military rank.”

In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered the confiscation of the 36 million roubles involved in the case, according to RIA Novosti.

Shamarin is among several high-ranking officials arrested over the past year, including former Deputy Defence Minister Timur Ivanov and Lieutenant General Yuri Kuznetsov, head of the ministry’s personnel department.

Analysts say the corruption purge reflects mounting pressure on the Russian government to streamline military operations and eliminate internal inefficiencies, particularly in the wake of prolonged conflict in Ukraine.
