Tierra de tambores

Every year, on Good Friday, more than 3,000 drums gather in the square of Calanda. For 26 hours they play uninterruptedly, bordering ecstasy. No one knows exactly why they do it, some believe that the drums emulate the earthquake that shook the earth after the death of Christ; others feel a tremor in their spirit produced by the terrible rumble... But all of them enter a collective trancein the town that vibrates in unison, turning into a catharsis that raises them a few centimeters above the trembling earth.

"Raíces vivas" (Living Roots) shares the ancestral knowledge transmitted from generation to generation orally, written or simply through experience.

The project, under the framework of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU, creates a new audiovisual archive on intangible heritage. The author, Juan Rayos, is a filmmaker and makes documentary work that draws on contemporary narrative, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and curated by Juanito Jones.

Todos los años, el día de viernes santo, se reúnen en la plaza de Calanda más de 3.000 tambores. Durante 26 horas tocarán ininterrumpidamente rozando el éxtasis. Nadie sabe exactamente por qué lo hacen, algunos creen que los tambores emulan el terremoto que sacudió la tierra tras la muerte de Cristo, otros sienten el estremecimiento del espíritu producido por el terrible retumbar… Pero todos ellos entran en el trance colectivo de un pueblo que vibra al unísono sintonizando todas sus individualidades en una catarsis que los eleva unos centímetros por encima de la tierra que tiembla.

"Raíces vivas" comparte los saberes ancestrales que se transmiten de generación en generación vía oral, escrita o sencillamente a través de la experiencia viva.

El proyecto, con motivo de la Presidencia española del Consejo de la UE, crea un nuevo archivo audiovisual sobre patrimonio inmaterial. El autor, Juan Rayos, es cineasta y realiza un trabajo documental que bebe de la narrativa contemporánea, en colaboración con el Ministerio de Cultura (@MinisteriodeCulturayDeporte) y comisariado por Juanito Jones
