This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.

This Core Concept video focuses on Rene Descartes' work, The Meditations, specifically on meditation 1, and the figure of the evil demon or genius that he introduces as a means for consolidating his methodological or hyperbolic doubt. This imagined figure is assumed to be extremely powerful, and to use all of his abilities to deceive Descartes about whether he perceives an external world and himself to have a body or not.
