Within the Meditations on First Philosophy Descartes realises that his senses deceive him and so all knowledge he has gained through his senses cannot be trusted. In a feeling of despair Descartes ponders the possibility that there is an all powerful Evil Demon, set out to deceive Descartes at every moment in his life, creating a world of falsehood and deception.
