American Bandstand 1964- Songs of ’63- What Will Mary Say, Johnny Mathis
Airdate: January 4, 1964
Today Bandstand (in its final weeks in Philadelphia) celebrates the year-gone-by by playing hit songs from 1963.
“What Will Mary Say” (retitled “What Will My Mary Say” in later record pressings) rose to #9 for 3 straight weeks in March of ’63 (not February, sorry Dick). This would be Johnny’s last top 10 hit until 1978 when his duet with Deniece Williams, “Too Much, Too Little, Too Late”, went all the way to #1.
Philly regulars spotted today are: Barbara Warchol (0:26), Gary Stapleford (1:06), Bruce Richard (1:21), Danny Kelly (1:22), Pat Carpino & Michelle Liebowitz (1:46), and Bobby Baritz & Ailyene Sullivan (2:10).
…..And last night, (Jan. 3), on the “Jack Paar Program”, Jack showed a film of a “funny” band he saw while visiting England a few months earlier. While they had been covered briefly in the news a few times over the last 2 months, this would be the first time The Beatles would be seen on U.S. television in primetime and more than a month before they appeared on Ed Sullivan. After he showed the film of the still mostly unknown, strangely dressed group with long hair singing “She Loves You”, he mockingly quipped “it’s nice to know that England has finally risen to our cultural level” getting a big laugh from his older audience.
Coming Up Next: New Year’s Resolutions for 1968 and a final look at the contestants in the ‘67/’68 dance contest.
