Tymbal Om | Strega, Morphagene & Rings 🪰

This piece was born out of long summer walks through nearby hills, where cicadas filled the air with their overwhelming chorus — loud, free, and phasing in ways that induced moments of awe and meditation. I recorded their songs, curious to hear how they might resonate inside a modular system, and brought them back into the studio.

Some cicada species spend most of their lives underground, hidden for 13 or even 17 years, only to emerge, sing, mate, and vanish in just a few days. Their existence struck me as a reminder of how complete life can be, even when brief: to sing and vanish, with nothing held back. This piece is meant as an homage to that cycle of life, and to these primordial creatures that have been on Earth for more than 200 million years.

At its core, the patch rests on two layers: an Om-like drone from Rings, resonating as it is excited by a cicada reel in Nebulae, and a second cicada reel shaped and transformed through Morphagene. Alongside these, Strega adds its own cicada-like voice, weaving into the texture as both noise and song.

This performance also marks the last summer patch of 2025 — a seasonal closing before new cycles begin. 🌞

🌀 One-take, performed live in studio. Cicada field recordings merged with modular textures.

🧵 Patch Notes:
• Two cicada reels: one through Morphagene, the other through Nebulae.
• Nebulae feeds Rings external input, exciting the resonator.
• Morphagene reel pitched down, modulated by Tides, creating a crunchy cicada texture.
• Tides in LFO mode, multed to modulate multiple parameters (and its own Smoothness).
• Rings → Roland 521 filter (stereo), L/R filters modulated at different LFO rates.
• Disting mk4 as Shift Register (F6), sending random quantized CV to Atom (Elements).
• Hermod serves as master clock, clock divider, and LFO source.
• Atom (Elements) adds complementary melody, modulated for metallic/smooth textures → processed by Clouds (granular + reverb).
• Clouds’ Position modulated, triggered by clock divider for extra grains.
• Plaits → Strega input, low drone with Harmonics/Timbre modulation.
• Strega drone in mid register, full wet, amp opened by Tides LFO + hand modulation.
• Blinds + NE Lapsus Os used for attenuation.
• Doepfer A-160-2 as clock divider.
• Final mix → Erica Synths Black Stereo Mixer → Beads (granular + reverb) → Nano CEQ (EQ + compression) → Befaco Output.
• Recorded into Ableton Live, using FabFilter’s Timeless (50% delay) as the main delay.
