Sermon Description: Matthew 24 is marked by battles within the church over how we should best interpret it. So, as we begin, we are warned not to impose our views on the Bible. There are three basic views on interpretation. The first view sees nearly all these prophecies as being fulfilled and having taken place before 70 AD. The second view sees these prophecies as being fulfilled in a future seven-year tribulation. These two views focus the prophecies upon Israel and not on the church. The last view sees these prophecies including the past, present, and future. Their focus is on the church instead of on Israel. First, chapters 24 and 25 are called the Olivet Discourse. To Jesus’ statements on the woes and destruction of the temple the disciples asked Jesus about when those things would take place. While the disciples likely thought all these things meant the end of this age, Jesus will separate them out. Then, Jesus warned about looking at the wrong signs. We see that there are endless wars and natural disasters. It also seems clear that Jesus is speaking about far more than just Israel. Finally, as we face an uncertain world, listen to Jesus. As we see the beginning of these birth pains, remember that Jesus is already overall.
