We started and finished this classic high level route at the Coledale Inn in Braithwaite. Freezing level was at 500m and strong, easterly winds had deposited snow on the lee side of Grisedale Pike which made for an enjoyable ascent of Hopegill Head and the descent to Coledale Hause.
After a short lunch stop we ascended Eel Crag by which time cloud base had lifted offering superb views in all directions. The descents from Eel Crag and Sail needed care and the remainder of the ridge to Causey Pike was icy in places requiring micro spikes.
To avoid the return to Braithwaite on the road we descended Causey Pike on the north side and picked up the path from Barrow Door.
A pint by the fire in the Coledale Inn finished off an excellent day on the fells.
