American TRAVELS to Kolkata on VISTARA Premium Economy (MAA - CCU)

Back in November of 2018, I traveled back to India, making it my second trip to the country in less than a year. This time around, I spent 18 days exploring seven completely new cities and discovering more of India’s rich culinary, cultural, and historical wonders. I also got to do it all with my travel buddy Sam from Samuel & Audrey, which made everything even better!

When traveling, you must always prepare for the unexpected and that’s exactly what happened when our time in Chennai was cut short due to an approaching tropical cyclone! So we wouldn’t be stuck in the city during the storm, we decided to make the journey to Kolkata a day early at 5:30 in the morning. Come along with us as we travel from Chennai to Kolkata!

After a stressful start to the day that involved several Uber cancellations, we finally got a ride to the airport. While we were a little bummed that we didn’t get three full days in Chennai that we initially planned, we looked back on our time in the city (especially our Marina Beach visit, our trip to a local temple, and the incredible seafood) fondly as we rode to the airport. Plus, it gave us an extra day in Kolkata.

After a 15- to 20-minute ride with practically no traffic, we arrived at the Chennai airport but had to do some extra walking because our driver let us out at the wrong place. My luggage was overweight again, but we were upgraded to Premium Economy, which is the same price, gives us more leg room, and provides a hot meal.

The airport consisted of one huge terminal. There was also a food court, which had lots of American eateries like Subway and KFC. I got a double espresso at The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, while Sam bought a cappuccino and a muffin. The coffee was black and so strong, just the way I like it! Just before we headed out, we met one of Sam’s fans who happened to be at the airport, too.

Our flight was on Vistara Airlines, which is a part of Singapore Airlines, which I love. It was our first time flying Premium Economy and it was amazing! The service was great and it was nice to have so much leg room. For our in-flight meal, we went with a multigrain omelet with beans, chicken sausage, a croissant, jam, fruit, and orange juice to have a brief break from northern and southern Indian food. The omelet was great, definitely heavy and fatty, but I needed it because I was starving. I had an after mint afterward, which was a nice palette cleanser.

After some turbulence, which we both hate as frequent fliers, we finally landed in Kolkata, the second-to-last city on our seven-city trip. Also known as the City of Joy, Kolkata was founded by the East India Trading Company. Because of its history, there’s a lot of British colonial architecture in the city. It’s the third-largest metro area in India behind Delhi and Mumbai and also has a large Chinese population, so I couldn’t wait to have some Chinese food there!

We requested an Uber and took a 45-minute ride through the city, we reached our Airbnb, which is located in a nice, suburban neighborhood on the south end of the city called Lake Gardens, which has tight streets lined with very colorful buildings. We pulled up to our building and met our Airbnb host outside. I couldn’t wait to start our adventures in Kolkata!
