CIVILISATION (S1-E10) - The Smile of Reason (1969)

Smile of Reason (S1-E10) is the tenth episode of season one of "Civilisation" released on Sun Apr 27, 1969, and Kenneth Clark as presenter.

In this episode, Sir Kenneth Clark tackles the Age of Enlightenment from the beginnings of the Revolution, moving from the polite conversations of the elegant parisian salons of the 18th century to the subsequent revolutionary politics, visiting the great european palaces of Blenheim, Versailles, Edinburgh and finally, to Thomas Jefferson's Monticello Hills in Virginia, where he made his home in the 1760s.

P.D. The eminent art historian Sir Kenneth Clark was commissioned to write and present an epic examination of western european culture, defining what he considered to be the crucial phases of its development. "Civilisation: A Personal View by Lord Clark", would be more than two years in the making, with filming in over 100 locations across 13 countries. The lavish series was hailed as a masterpiece when it was first transmitted in 1969.(*)
