Toronto: 4 dead in horrific highway fiery crash 6-24-2016

At 10h pm last night a horrific and spectacular multi car crash left 4 people dead on Highway 400 just south of the Sheppard Ave overpass in Toronto. A fire broke out and spread to multiple vehicles involved in the initial collision, among them one tractor trailer and what looks to be a sedan car. That car has been heavily crushed and is barely recognizable as a vehicle. Surveillance camera images show a large ball of fire consuming more than one vehicle in the moments after the impact in the southbound lanes of the highway. An impressive rescue effort was deployed to come to help to any potential victim as well as to help battling the fire. One hour into the fiery incident TFS fire trucks were still being dispatched to the scene. The OPP, Toronto Fire Services, Toronto Police Services and Toronto Paramedics are some of the agencies present at the scene. Firemen battled the challenging fire as some of the hotspots were hidden deep in the rubles. Crews tackled the transport truck fire for over an hour due to the intensity of the blaze. Initially, 5 people had been declared dead at the scene but the death toll in this tragedy luckily downgraded to 4, including 1 child. A total of 12 vehicles were involved in the collision, reported by OPP, among them 3 are semi trucks. Highway 400 is packed with cars that were stuck behind the accident and people were seen getting out of their car waiting for any way out to clear. At some point a police officer told a group of riders who were filming to get their children away and to get back in their car. The traffic was shut both ways on Highway 400 from Finch Ave to Highway 401. The safety scene extended beyond all lanes of the highway as police also blocked Bartor Rd which is a street that is running perpendicular to the highway. A command center was setup at that location for firemen where they could take a break and have some drinks. Medias also gathered on that road in order to get as close to the wreck as possible to film live news and interview police officers. Emergency crews actually had to breach a fence that was separating Bartor Rd from the highway. The trucks that was on fire appears to be missing the front end so they likely unhooked it moments after the impact to prevent aggravating the situation. A car can be seen ''lodged'' straight up against the rear of the truck which indicates it might have come in contact with the larger vehicle at a very high speed. It is reported that two other people were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and others suffered minor injuries. A mass casualty Toronto Paramedics oversize vehicle was spotted at the scene. All lanes going north and south on Highway 400 as well as Bartor Rd were shut to traffic to allow crews to respond more efficiently. Forensic identification crews wearing full body air-tight suits investigated along with TPS officers. People were stuck in the traffic behind the scene of the accident in some cases for over two hours.
