Toronto: Ducks rescued after oil spill in river 7-14-2015

Today the Toronto Wildlife Rescue Centre was busy after an oil spill in the Mimico Creek in Etobicoke near Toronto. At least 30 ducks covered in mineral oil were rescued by staff and volunteers. A truck rollover last night at H401 and H427 is believed to be responsible for the incident. The truck was allegedly transporting power pole transformers which are filled with oil that spilled in the water after the crash. Wildlife officers used nets and blankets to catch and transport ducks to a recovery centre. Images show rescue personnel catching wild ducks with nets and putting them into boxes at Ravenscrest Park in Etobicoke. A water truck was on scene to pour water into the creek in order to dilute the concentration of the oil and diesel. Toronto fire department helped out by setting up booms at different locations along the creek to stop oil from spreading. According to the wildlife rescue people oil on duck's feathers prevents them from flying freely and avoid predators. It also disable the preening effect that ducks use to protect their feathers from absorbing water and keep them warm. The ducks that were captured today have been brought to a recovery centre where veterinarians will clean them up before releasing them in the wild.
