La Rocca di Cerbaia, domina la vetta di uno sperone roccioso di quasi quattrocento metri di altezza a strapiombo sulla valle del fiume Bisenzio. Da secoli la struttura fortificata combatte con le forze della natura che ne hanno causato prima l'abbandono, poi la rovina.
La sua origine, almeno nell'aspetto con il quale la vediamo oggi, pare risalire agli inizi del 1100, quando gli Alberti eressero sul luogo un fortilizio a controllo dell'antica strada detta "di Lombardia", collegamento fra la Toscana e le regioni transappenniniche. Nonostante le sue funzioni militari, la rocca fu utilizzata dagli Alberti per un lungo periodo anche come dimora, fatto confermato dalle rifiniture di ottima qualità ancora visibili all'interno del mastio.
La leggenda, quasi sicuramente priva di fondamento, vuole che nel 1285 sia stata rifiutata dagli stessi Alberti la richiesta di asilo presso la Rocca presentata dal Poeta Dante Alighieri durante il suo esilio da Firenze. Lo stesso sommo Poeta rese famosa una delle figlie discendenti della famiglia proprietaria della rocca, Cunizza Alberti, protagonista di una animata vita sentimentale nella sua "Divina Commedia" (Paradiso IX, 13-36)

The Rocca di Cerbaia dominates the summit of a rocky spur almost four hundred meters high overhanging the Bisenzio river valley. For centuries the fortified structure has been fighting with the forces of nature that first caused its abandonment, then its ruin.
Its origin, at least in the aspect with which we see it today, seems to date back to the early 1100s, when the Alberti family erected a fortress on the site to control the ancient road called "di Lombardia", a link between Tuscany and the trans-Apennine regions. . Despite its military functions, the fortress was used by the Alberti for a long period also as a residence, a fact confirmed by the high quality finishes still visible inside the keep.
The legend, almost certainly without foundation, has it that in 1285 the request for asylum at the Rocca presented by the poet Dante Alighieri during his exile from Florence was refused by the Alberti themselves. The same great poet made famous one of the descendants of the family that owns the fortress, Cunizza Alberti, the protagonist of an animated sentimental life in his "Divine Comedy" (Paradiso IX, 13-36) .
